A fertility clinic in Spain is offering patients the option of using embryos 'left-over' from previous treatments without the donors' explicit consent, the Telegraph reports. The Instituto Marques clinic near Barcelona, which provides fertility treatment to foreign couples, runs an 'embryo adoption scheme' whereby patients can adopt an embryo which has been left behind by couples who have not decided whether to donate it to other patients, to research, or to destroy it.

New research reveals why the UK's Medical Research Council (MRC) failed to fund research leading to the birth of the first in vitro fertilisation and embryo transfer (IVFET) baby. The MRC rejected Dr Robert Edwards and Dr Patrick Steptoe's original grant application for 'studies on Human Reproduction' in 1971. The pair received private funding, and were ultimately successful, when Louise Brown was born in 1978.

Children born following IVF are more likely to develop childhood cancers than children conceived naturally, according to a new study. This risk does, however, appear to be small and may result from specific postnatal factors.

A mathematical model for predicting a couple's chances of a successful pregnancy by IVF after one failed attempt has been developed by US researchers. The model is 1000 times more accurate at predicting a positive outcome than standard methods, which are mainly based on a woman's age. The model may help clinics give more personalised and reliable advice to couples.

Dear All, I wish to gather information on the pH measurement of culture media in clinical IVF laboratories from round the world. I request you all to share your procedure / protocol. I would also appreciate to get responses from those who do not measure pH in their labs.

Questionnaire  

1. Do you measure the pH of culture media? How frequently?
2. What procedure and equipment ( make and type of pH meter and the probe) do you use to measure the pH? Plz brief the procedure.
3. Do you use different pH at different stages of culture viz. for fertilization, for D1 to D3 culture and for blastocyst culture?
4. If you use just one brand of media, how frequently do you need to change your incubator settings?
5.a What is the altitude of your place ?

5.b Which incubator(s) do you use ? What reading (range of reading may be mentioned) of %CO2 do(es) your incubator(s) display at the desired pH of media ?

Hi SPG, the sensible way which I also do follow is not to aspirate the cytoplasm in which I have found quite good fertilization rate.
