Preimplantation genetic screening (PGS) for aneuploidy was first reported by Verlinsky et al (1995) and Munne et al (1995). Both of these initial studies analysed polar bodies. The aim of the technique is to help determine the best IVF embryo for transfer on the grounds of the polar body or embryo's chromosomes, by performing biopsy and analysis of the chromosomes using fluorescent in situ hybridisation (FISH).

World Congress on Fertility PreservationBrussels, BelgiumDecember 10-12, 2009The increasing successes of oncologic treatments make implementation of procedures aimed at preserving fertility even more crucial. These procedures must not be limited to preserving and restoring fertility in patients undergoing therapies, but also be applied to any cases where the reproductive function is threatened. The aim of this conference is to offer an updated review of fertility preservation techniques.

UK scientists have created human sperm cells in the laboratory for the first time. The sperm, called in vitro-derived (IVD) sperm, were grown from embryonic stem (ES) cells. The researchers hope that the IVD sperm will provide a useful model for studying the development of sperm cells and the causes of male infertility.

Years before many people knew that they were infertile or would become infertile a law was made to actively discriminate against them. Many are now on a very tight deadline to save embryos so that they have the possibility of creating a much wanted family.

2 Failed ICSI 15 July 2009 1
Last day I have ICSI with 5 cells (4 MII and 1 MI). On the next day one cell were with 2pb and 1pn and 4 cells with 1pb and now pn. The icsi procedure was well (at the same day with other patient 3 fertilized out of 3). What may be wrong? Does it mean that they should take a donor oocyte?  Thank you!

Re: Failed ICSI
Not necessarily, it could be the sperm. Polar body grading on D1 (as far as I'm aware) doesn't tell you much.I assume you checked the eggs for fertilization at the right time. Did you recheck them again an hour (or couple of hours later)? Did you culture them out to D2?

Re: Embryologist with Hepatitis B positive or Hepatitis B carrier
Interesting question. I know clinics in Australiasia (most, if not all) take regular blood tests from the embryologists for Hep B, C and HIV; and organise vaccination for Hep A&B if you haven't had it done already. This is all done post-hiring.

Re: CO2 % at high altitudes
Dear Michael Reed, Thanks so much. You have touched many finer aspects of the lab physiology! I am using Cook media which already has protein. One of my incubators has infrared and the another requires humidity. My place may differ from yours in terms of high humidity. I didn't think that humidity may have a significant role. I'll look into it. I am waiting for the result with last batch of media (8 cases) before deciding to try with a newer one. As Dr Ahmad Omar pointed out growing to blast stage is a good idea. But can't you predict the incubator performance with grades of D2 embryos? Regards
Sowmya Dinesh

Re: CO2 % at high altitudes
Thanks for the replies .. few more queries..!
This is my feedback after changing my incubator settings. I had excellent fert and cleav rate (One woman having 20 0ut of 20 grade 1/2 D2 embryos). I am awaiting the hCG values in another 10 days.Considering the fact that even labs at higher altitudes than mine are requiring around 6-7%Co2 I think I really need to re evaluate the incubators once more. But one more fact is that the present climate around here is very cloudy, cold with continuous drizzle through the day. I really need to know what is the relation of humidity to co2% and whats the accurate method of measuring humidity. Thanks for the replies.
Sowmya Dinesh
