News: Fertility doctor wins libel costs and tops IVF league tables
New figures release last week by the UK's Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) show that two clinics run by fertility expert Mohammad Taranissi - the Assisted Reproduction and Gynaecology Centre (ARGC) and the Reproductive Genetics Institute (RGI) - are the most successful in the country in terms of 'live birth rates' (the number of babies born compared to the number of IVF cycles carried out).

News: Widow claims human right to use dead husband's sperm
The UK's High Court has ruled that it may have been unlawful for a widow to have removed her dead husband's sperm. Despite UK law requiring valid written consent for the storage and use of sperm, the 42-year-old widow obtained emergency Court permission to have sperm collected from her 31-year-old husband's body hours after he unexpectedly died from complications with a routine operation to remove his appendix in June 2007.

News: Research or sale? US IVF patients are asked what to do with 'spare embryos'
The results of two related studies undertaken in the US show that a high proportion of infertile couples are in favour of their 'spare' embryos being used for research, whilst over half would advocate theirs being sold to help other couples.

News: Anti-depressants may be linked to male infertility
Anti-depressants may be linked to male infertility, say researchers at the Cornell Medical Center in New York. Results of a study reported in the New Scientist this week reveal that males taking anti-depressants - also known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibiters (SSRIs) - could be damaging their sperm.

| Are there any documents which state specific information about what consitutes a CO2 incubator which is validated for embryo incubation. Or is it just clear documentation that your incubator is performing to standard wrt temperature, gas concentration etc.

Re: IVF Incubators
This is an interesting question, pitting regulatory requirements against practical applications. There are so many types of incubators - poultry, cell, microbial - bascially defining an incubator as a machine or unit that can provide a controlled atmosphere and/or temperature.
In my lab, in addition to some older incubators, I have two newer, basic CO2 cell culture incubators that have 510(k) approval for IVF, from ThermoForma. I didn't buy them because of the 510(k) approval - although that's nifty - but becuause they were inexpensive relative to other units, and I've had very good reliability from ThermoForma units.
I also use glass jars with a volume of sterile cell culture water in the bottom (to provide humidity) as mini-incubators that contain the embryos, and for temperature control, the jars sit inside the cell incubators. The gas used to fill my glass jars is totally validated by gas chromatography, by pH trials, and by an independent CO2 detector. By my definition, the jars are incubators, although they do require an outside heat source. I could use a heated chamber/incubator without a gas inlet, however I like being able to put other things on the shelf, under the CO2/air atmopshere.
Other chamber types, sealed plastic bags, or bags of other materials, have been used in the same way.
Getting down to it, there are not too many items that are in use in the human IVF lab - aside from culture media -that are actually designed for human IVF. Most are borrowed from other applications - or adapted. There is a listing on the FDA website that has 510(k) approved products, and you'll find a few items, but not as many as you would expect.
So the bottom line, in my opinion, you can design and define your system any way you need to, as long as you can verify, and validate that your units meet your standards - or the standards of the industry - and that your standards meet the needs of the proposed purpose - pH, fertilization, cleavage rates, quality developement, pregnancy and other outcome measures.

Re: Blood or mucus
Mucus should be removed from the cevical os before the ET procedure. Ultrasound guidance with a full bladder should be used to direct the catheter and the tip of the inner catheter should be advanced upto midcavity, so that when injected, the embryos will lie in the upper uterine cavity, approx. 1.5cm.-2.0cm. below the fundus.

Re: H2O2 articles
6% H2O2 is listed in Laboratory Safety 2nd ed Pages 226 as effective againt vegatative and bacteria, bacterial spores, viruses with a 6% concentration with a contact time of 10-600 minutes
This is equivalent for cidex (gluteraldehyde) at 2% with a 10-600 contact time. 70% Etahnol has a shorter contact time of 10-30 minutes

Re: Clevage arrest
1. If you kept the 2 PN zygotes cultured in Cleavage media under oil, which is older and not filtered oil, there is chance of bacterial contamination and block cleavage.
2. Cleavage media has to be opened from fresh bottle or it needs to be filtered for sterility.
One thing is certain that this problem is definitely from the lab. and so your quality controls need be scanned.
