News: Lack of sperm means some UK couples can't get treatment
The number of recorded sperm donations in the UK has fallen to the lowest level since anonymity was removed from donors in April 2005, say officials. Figures published in the Times newspaper show that there was a decline of about 20 per cent in the number of treatments in the year between 2005 and 2006. In 2005, 2,727 women were treated using donated sperm, whereas in 2006 it was only 2,107.

| The main use of heparin is to avoid the blood clot during the oocyte retrieval procedure. Does anyone use flushing medium without heparin in their procedure? Any effect on fertilization rate in IVF?

Re: Blast transfer
Blastocyst formation does not mean that embryos are normal. We are performing PGD and I noticed that chromosomally abnormal embryos might reach to blastocyst stage, even 3PN do so sometimes.
Age, as mentioned before Endometrium thickness might also affect the implantation.
As for the sperm, abnormalities in sperm such as (genes, chromosomes, centromere...)even if they were morphologically normal might also affect. Partcularly from OAT patients. It might be related to Y chromosome microdeletions.
Hope this will help.

Re: flushing medium with or without heparin
Any UK clinician responding to this question should first read the recent HFEA alert about heparin. This was issued following alerts issued by the MHRA.
Please note, UK clinics must login to the HFEA site to view this alert. www.hfea.gov.uk
The MHRA alerts can be viewed here: http://www.mhra.gov.uk/Publications/Safetywarnings/Drugalerts/CON014890

Re: flushing medium with or without heparin
The presence of heparin only delays the clot formation for a small time, if you are screening the follicular aspirate at the same time then, probably you don\'t need it.
